Built from the Ground Up

In 1970, three tradesmen made a decision that would shape Cape Breton's built environment for generations. John Yurchesyn, Nelson Latimer, and Jim Kehoe purchased the small jobs division from the contracting company where they had been working, and set out on their own.

They called it Joneljim — a name built from their own: John, Nelson, and Jim. Starting with residential and commercial work, they built a reputation across Cape Breton for reliability, craftsmanship, and delivering on time.

Over the decades, Joneljim grew into one of Cape Breton's largest construction enterprises, with over 250 employees. With growth came diversification — building supplies, millwork, windows and doors, well drilling, seniors housing, and real estate all added along the way.

Today the Joneljim Group remains rooted in Cape Breton, owned and operated by the same family that started it all.

Jim & Roma Kehoe

Jim and Roma Kehoe

Jim Kehoe has spent a lifetime giving back to the island that shaped him. Over five decades, he and his wife Roma channelled their resources, time, and energy into the hospitals, universities, and organizations that keep Cape Breton strong.

Roma Kehoe (1942–2024) was the heart of their philanthropic work. A retired French teacher and devoted community servant, Roma volunteered with the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, Hospice and Palliative Care Society, Festival of the Greens Holiday Gala, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Catholic Women's League, among many others.

Together, Jim and Roma were inducted into the Cape Breton Business & Philanthropy Hall of Fame in 2023. In 2025, Cape Breton University named its renovated arena the Kehoe Forum in their honour.

Jim and his family continue her legacy through ongoing support for the CBRHF's Because You Care Gift Catalogue, which has raised over $270,000 for patient care.

Roma Kehoe (1942–2024) was one of Cape Breton's most beloved volunteers, inducted into the Cape Breton Philanthropy Hall of Fame in 2023. The Because You Care Gift Catalogue — raising over $270,000 for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital — is published annually in her memory.
